Step-by-Step Mural Painting Guide
What are abstract designs?
These are loose designs, which are free flowing and don't have too much structure. For example a mural is a formal design, where with abstract you can add in bits anywhere you like, there is no need to stick to a specified template.
Say for example you wanted to paint the walls blue with clouds and birds etc, this design would be more abstract as you can add in balloons or kites at random. Or if you wanted to achieve an underwater effect, fish, divers or even a treasure chest can be painted in at any section.Achieving a result
There are a number of ways you can achieve this result for example using a sponging technique is great for the background colour as this will cover the walls quickly and easily and is great for getting sky or water effects. Also sponges are cheap to buy and can be found in any good DIY Store or Art shop.
Sponging simply means dabbing a sponge into the paint then loosely dabbing the wall with the sponge, this will give texture and shading to a wall. After the first coat is dry you can sponge other colours over the top to build up the effect.
To achieve the design i.e. angels or butterflies you can either, if you are confident, paint them free hand or alternatively this is where stencils come into their own, this will give you uniformity across the design. You can then always use the stencils on furniture or doors to continue the theme throughout the room.
