The Colour Scheme

The colour scheme is very important, as you'll probably want to create a bright and airy room. Then again if your child insists that they want nothing more than a theme which is like something from Deep Space 9, then I guess the choice is yours.

However assuming that this is not the case then the brighter the colours the better, especially for babies and young tots as this will give them things to look at and focus in on. Be careful though as too many bright colours are not good either.

If you are thinking of an overall theme then choose colourful and bold for the design and more muted subtle shades for the backgrounds, this will then allow you to paint almost any design but not detract any light. So for example if you are going for abstract, then the background colour should be light shades of blue, green etc then the painted design can be as bright as you like.
With murals if you are going for Fairy castle or Jungle which could become quite dark, counteract this effect by using plenty of sky and remember there are many different shades of green and grey, so use the lighter shades, the overall effect will be just as good, but not too dark.

Match your furniture to your design, so for example if you decide to paint a mural on one wall and then incorporate a lighter shade on the other walls then the furniture you use on the other three walls can be as vivid and bold as you like because the background colour will mute the effect, i.e. red, green or blue drawers and accessories will work fine with a pale green wall.
If the design flows over the whole room then light wood furniture is always a good choice, drawers can be jazzed up with inexpensive handles and you can choose strong coloured curtains which complement the design.

One point to remember is that any accessories such as bedcovers, curtains or rugs should be kept very simple, especially if the design is bold, i.e. If Barbie is your theme then having a Barbie mural, bedcovers and curtains could give a very busy effect.
Solid coloured accessories are best, regardless of colour as these will blend into the design, so if your going for a seascape then you can team this with blue and yellow accessories and bright fish door handles.
